- May 31, 1819 Walt Whitman is born in Long Island, NY.
- 1855 Whitman publishes Leaves of Grass.
- May 1860 Third edition of Leaves of Grass published.
- 1876 Whitman publishes Two Rivulets.
- 1882 District Attorney of Boston places interdict on Leaves of Grass on the grounds that it contains obscenities.
- April 14, 1887 Whitman reads at a lecture remembering Lincoln at Madison Square Theatre.
