HLAA Applauds Support of Consumer-Driven Hearing Health Care

BETHESDA, MD: In an unprecedented joint communiqué the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA), the American Academy of Audiology (the Academy) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) delivered a statement focusing on consumer needs in the delivery models of hearing health care and recognizing the changing face of the hearing health care environment.

HLAA Board of Trustees Adopts Statement of Strategic Intent

At our June 2012 meeting in Providence, RI, the HLAA Board of Trustees adopted a Statement of Strategic Intent. The Statement has been almost two years in the making, and is the result of a collaborative process between HLAA management and staff together with members of the Board of Trustees. In a series of meetings, our discussions were guided by the Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, Jim DeCaro; Past President Peter Fackler; and our facilitator, Robb Adams of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester Institute of Technology.

Update on the Progress of Ratification of CRPD

Hearing Loss Association of American, along with many other disability organizations united in their support of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), urges members of the US Senate to ratify CRPD. The US International Council on People with Disabilities (USICD) notes their website:

As the Senate session closed on Thursday, August 2, Senator Reid made a point to state his support for the bipartisan effort to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Senators Durbin (D-IL), McCain (R-AZ), Kerry (D-MA), Moran (R-KS), Coons (D-DE), Barrasso (R-WY), Harkin (D-IA), and Udall (D-NM) have all joined together to lead the support of the CRPD.

HLAA Chapters’ Advocates See Success in Delaware!

People with hearing loss of all ages and those with speech disabilities will benefit from two bills Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed into law August 3, 2012. Governor Markell is Chair of the National Governor’s Association (NGA) and has made employment of people with disabilities his major project with the NGA.

Call on Your Senator to Support the
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Last week, July 26, 2012, on the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, HLAA watched as the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations voted to send the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) to the Senate Floor for a vote. The room was packed with disability advocates who could barely restrain themselves from applause as the vote was taken.
