Heeling Autism: Class of September 2012

Every day, we understand more about the exponential powers of our dogs.  As five Heeling Autism service dogs head out into the world this afternoon, we marvel at the impact they’ll have in their new homes.  They’ll help children and their parents, they will support siblings and friends, and they’ll strengthen families’ connections with their communities.  Quite simply – they are going to make the world a better place.

Also amazing is the impact these five dogs have already had on the lives of the people involved with their journeys.  At yesterday’s graduation ceremony, one puppy raiser thanked us for her experience, sharing that her dog had improved her relationship with her husband and supported their family through some very tough times.  We always invite people to join the Guiding Eyes team as a volunteer or donor and to help us change lives; we continue to realize how much people’s own lives are forever changed as a result of their support.

Heeling Autism Gabriel heads home to Connecticut, where he’ll meet 5-year-old Thomas.  Tom’s parents have been so worried about their son.  His mom shared that now with Gabriel in their lives, they feel they have been given the best chance to provide Tom with a bright future.

Heeling Autism Daryl will live with the Forcello family.  He’ll become a friend to 10-year-old Sean, and they’ll share a deep, meaningful relationship in which verbal communication is not important.

Joe Dolan will bring Heeling Autism Nixon home for his son Ryan.  Joe explained that sharing activities with all of his children has been very difficult – or even impossible.  With Nixon, Joe feels that Ryan will finally have the opportunity to get out with his family and experience life fully.   Joe’s sister-in-law Alison has Guiding Eyes dog Winnie as her guide dog, and the Dolan family is the first ever to receive service dogs from both Guiding Eyes programs.

Heeling Autism dogs Gabriel, Daryl, Nixon, Indo and Gibbs will enable miracles in their new homes.  Our hearts are with each one of them as they fulfill their destinies, and we can’t wait to hear about all that is yet to come.

Congratulations to the Heeling Autism graduating class of September 2012!

Guiding Eyes is grateful to the Hatfield Family Fund for generously sponsoring our September 2012 Heeling Autism class.
