Medical Plans 3 medical insurance options allowing more control over healthcare expenditures; healthcare premiums taken on a pretax basis, thus reducing employees’ taxable income if they so elect to do so

Retirement & savings

401(k) retirement plan

To encourage saving for the future, the Laboratory offers a robust, tax-deferred 401(k) plan with a variety of investment options.

Roth 401(k) savings plan

The Laboratory also offers a Roth 401(k) plan that provides tax-free, qualified distributions during retirement.

Elective matching contribution

Eligible employees receive a dollar-for-dollar match up to 6% of eligible compensation for that pay period.

Non-elective matching contribution

Each year, eligible employees receive a non-elective contribution to their account based on years of service and annual eligible compensation.

Time off

Alternative work schedules

A variety of work schedules are available that allow flexibility for workers and Laboratory programs. The most popular work schedule is the 9/80—employees work 80 hours over a 9 workday (two week) period, with a Friday off every other week.

Vacation

Employees with appointments of greater than 6 months are eligible for vacation accrual starting their first day of work. Accrual rates are based on years of service, and summarized in the following chart (based on a full-time schedule).

Sick leave

Employees accrue sick leave starting on their first day of work at the rate of 8 hours per month (2.4 weeks per year). Sick leave may be used for specific circumstances, including employee illness, medical appointments, and illness in the employee's immediate family.

Catastrophic Paid Leave (CPL)

The CPL program provides an avenue for Laboratory employees to donate vacation hours for use by other employees when their accrued vacation and sick time is depleted following an unanticipated serious illness or injury to the employee or a family member.

Other leave programs

Paid and unpaid leave programs are provided for a variety of reasons, including military-related needs, personal circumstances, and development and collaboration needs.

Tax savings

Employees can take advantage of flexible spending accounts to set aside money for eligible expenses on a pretax basis.

Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA)

Contribution amounts up to $2,500 for eligible medical expenses, such as doctor visits, contacts, dental procedures, and over-the-counter medications. For added convenience, employees can take advantage of a MasterCard debit card and easily file for reimbursements online.

Dependent Care Reimbursement Account (DCRA)

Contribution amounts up to $5,000 for eligible dependent care expenses, such as childcare and qualifying adult dependent care. For added convenience, employees can take advantage of a MasterCard debit card and easily file for reimbursements online.
