Focus on graduate education, research in area of multiscale materials and mechanics

The Institute for Multiscale Materials Studies is a collaborative education and research program between Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), focused on the multiscale science and mechanics of soft, responsive, engineered materials.

Activities combine theory, experiment, and numerical simulation of phenomena in soft materials spanning 7-14 orders of magnitude in both length and time in a highly interactive, multidisciplinary curriculum that addresses problems of national interest while supporting Laboratory goals of recruiting, retaining, and reinvesting in Los Alamos.

We are centrally located in the National Security Education Center at Los Alamos.

Collaborative education

We are building a graduate degree emphasis area in multiscale materials and mechanics (MMM), with master’s and PhD degrees that are accredited through UCSB; no other institution offers an educational opportunity that combines these particular areas.

Our vision is to educate students for whom working in teams is the norm and who have the ability to work across disciplines and with a variety of techniques.
