Applied Energy Program Office serves as the hub connecting the Laboratory’s scientific and technical resources to DOE sponsors, DoD programs, and to industry.

The Applied Energy Program Office manages Los Alamos National Laboratory programs funded by the Department of Energy’s (DOE's) Offices of Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy, Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, and Fossil Energy. With energy use increasing across the nation and the world, Los Alamos is using its world-class scientific capabilities to enhance national energy security by developing energy sources with limited environmental impact and by improving the efficiency and reliability of the energy infrastructure.

To achieve these goals, the Applied Energy Program Office serves as the hub connecting the Laboratory’s scientific and technical resources to DOE sponsors, Department of Defense (DoD) programs at Los Alamos, and to industry through the Laboratory’s Technology Transfer Division. The Applied Energy programs encompass the broad set of energy focus areas:

  • Fuel cells
  • Hydrogen storage & production
  • Hydrogen safety codes and standards
  • Vehicle technologies
  • Carbon storage
  • Unconventional fossil fuels
  • Carbon dioxode separation & capture
  • Superconductivity
  • Smart grid
  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Geothermal energy
  • Advanced Research Projects Agency—Energy (ARPA-E)
