VBA's Transformation is Imperative

VBA is responding to the significant expansion in the scope and complexity of its mission. From 2008 to 2012, VBA processed 16 percent more claims than during years prior. This is improvement, but it was dwarfed by the 50-percent increase in incoming claims – which contained 19 percent more medical conditions, making them more complex.

Other external factors that are contributing to the increase in number and complexity of claims include:
• Ten years of war with increased survival rates
• Post-conflict downsizing of the military
• Additional medical presumptive conditions
• Successful outreach encouraging more Veterans to submit claims

Unless VBA transforms, today’s half a million claims backlog will become 1.5 million in 2015 and we will be unable to meet the growing demands of our Veteran’s, their families and survivors.  VBA must bring together changes in People, Process and Technology in an integrated approach that enables us to process Veterans’ disability claims more efficiently and better support the needs of Veterans, Servicemembers, their families and survivors.
