9/11 Memorial

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum created the official 9/11 Memorial application as a guide to understanding 9/11 through the eyes of those who witnessed the events. Given the sensitivity surrounding the events of 9/11, viewer discretion is advised. The app has three features:

Tour

A seven-stop walking tour of the area around the World Trade Center, accompanied by audio and photo narration. The events of the day and its aftermath are told by first responders, rescue workers, volunteers, and those who lived and worked in Lower Manhattan on 9/11. While the walking tour takes place in Lower Manhattan, the tour content is accessible to users anywhere.

Explore

View images related to the events of 9/11 and their aftermath taken nearby wherever you are. Photos may be viewed in Augmented Reality-technology mode which overlays images on the camera view. All photos were contributed to the museum by survivors and witnesses through 911history.org.

Timeline

An interactive timeline of the day’s events and aftermath. Includes links to witness photos taken during these time blocks.

The app can operate in an offline mode for non-U.S. visitors who have disabled data roaming. In this mode, all tour content is still accessible. The app includes a map of free WiFi hotspots near the tour route for downloading “Explore” photos from the vicinity.

The app is rated 9+ due to infrequent/mild realistic violence or infrequent/mild mature/suggestive themes.

For more information on the 9/11 Memorial, please visit http://www.911memorial.org/

Or simply listen to the people (staff and/or visitors) you choose as they talk about the objects and time periods from American history that most interest you, and “vote up” your favorites so they get priority in the play list for other listeners!

Aesop for Children

The Aesop for Children interactive book is designed to be enjoyed by readers of any age. The book contains over 140 classic fables, accompanied by beautiful illustrations and interactive animations.

“Aesop's Fables”—also called “the Aesopica”—are a collection of stories designed to teach moral lessons credited to Aesop, a Greek slave and story-teller thought to have lived between 620 and 560 BCE.

Aesop's fables are some of the most well known in the world and have been translated in multiple languages and become popular in dozens of cultures through the course of five centuries. They have been told and retold in a variety of media, from oral tradition to written storybooks to stage, film and animated cartoon versions—even in architecture.

The fables remain a popular choice for moral education of children today. Younger scholars will be able to trace the origin of aphorisms such as “sour grapes” and “a bird in the hand.”

This interactive ebook is presented by the Library of Congress, adapted from the book “The Aesop for Children: with Pictures by Milo Winter,” published by Rand, McNally & Co in 1919. This work is considered to be in the public domain in the United States.

Airport Wait Times

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) closely monitors the flight processing times, commonly referred to as wait times, for arriving flights at 23 of the busiest international airports. The flight processing time is the length of time from flight arrival to the time the last passenger on the flight is screened by CBP officers in the primary processing area.

Flight arrival patterns can vary considerably by time of year and day of week, as well as by time of day. The best predictor of wait times for future flights is the wait time observed for the corresponding seasonal time period in the recent past. To help travelers in planning their next flight, CBP is providing the public with historical data for the past twelve months that can be used to estimate seasonal wait times by airport and arrival terminal.

As you are planning your next flight, remember that CBP airport wait times do not include time to retrieve baggage or navigate through the airport. These times should be factored in as well if you will be scheduling a connecting flight. Always consult with the airline and airport authority for additional guidance.

Chandra X-ray Observatory

Since its launch on July 23, 1999, the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been NASA’s flagship mission for X-ray astronomy, taking its place in the fleet of “Great Observatories.”

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory is a telescope specially designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the Universe such as exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. Because X-rays are absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, Chandra must orbit above it, up to an altitude of 139,000 km (86,500 mi) in space. The Smithsonian’s Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA, hosts the Chandra X-ray Center which operates the satellite, processes the data, and distributes it to scientists around the world for analysis. The Center maintains an extensive public web site about the science results and an education program.

Sub sites like FBIJobs.gov and the Vault (vault.fbi.gov)—along with some pages that are not easily viewable on mobile devices—are not included but can still be viewed on smartphones in the full versions.

Among other features, the mobile site includes:

Navigation menus that open with a single click;
An easy-to-use search bar;
A rotating slider with the latest news; and
Easily scrollable lists of wanted fugitives and missing kids.
No downloads or applications are required to use the site, and it works on all mobile devices with JavaScript enabled. Visitors using smartphones will be automatically redirected to the mobile site; tablet users will still see the full version of FBI.gov. Users can switch between the full and mobile versions of the site through links in the footer of the respective sites.

The FBI.gov website receives between five and 10 million visitors each month. Popular pages include the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List and other Wanted pages, the Sex Offender Registry, crime statistics, and background checks.

Fishes: East Pacific

This App is the first of a set of 3 portable identification guides for Apple touch-screen devices from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute that will cover the regional shore-fish faunas of all three neotropical biogeographic marine regions: the Tropical Eastern Pacific, the Greater Caribbean (Caribbean and nearby areas) and Brazil.

This Fishes: East Pacific App was adapted from the website Shorefishes of the tropical eastern Pacific: online information system (www.stri.org/sftep), which was published in late 2008. That website was derived from a CD format system of the same name, published in 2002, which in turn was developed from English (1994) and Spanish (1998) books of the same title.

This App provides a set of portable identification tools functionally equivalent to those in the website edition. While that website requires an ongoing internet connection to function, the App works independently of the web after being downloaded. Fishes: East Pacific works wherever an iPhone can go. As well as acting as an ID Guide this App also allows users to make and organize lists that record information about fishes in the App’s database, and can be downloaded by email.

- Language Interfaces
This App includes complete English and Spanish language interfaces. The user is automatically connected to the interface that relates to the language set in the preferences of the device.

Identify Invasive Animals and Plants in FL

IveGot1 brings the power of EDDMapS to your iPhone. Now you can submit invasive species observations directly with your iPhone from the field. These reports are uploaded to EDDMapS and e-mailed directly to local and state verifiers for review. IveGot1 was developed by the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service, in cooperation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the University of Florida Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants. IveGot1 is more than just an iPhone app, it is an integrated invasive species reporting and outreach campaign for Florida that includes the app, a website with direct access to invasive species reporting and a hotline 1-888-IVEGOT1 for instant reports of live animals.

Every year more than 85 million people visit Florida. However, people are not Florida's only visitors; Florida is also an inviting destination for invasive species that threaten to undermine the health of our environment. More than an inconvenience, invasive plants and animals can greatly alter our native landscape, adversely impact native wildlife, destroy agricultural crops and threaten our health. Invasions of exotic species cost Floridians over $500 million each year. The economic costs are small compared to the ecological ones. Florida has millions of acres of public lands; these lands furnish us the water we drink, the air we breathe and countless recreational opportunities. These public lands are highly vulnerable to invasion by exotic plant and animal species; it is estimated that more than 1.7 million acres of Florida’s natural areas have been infested by invasive species.

By reporting sightings of invasive animals and plants, we can better assess the extent of the infestations and hopefully eradicate new infestations before they become huge problems such as melaleuca or Burmese pythons. The goal of IveGot1 is to make identification and reporting easy and efficient as possible. Easy species reporting that captures your current location and allows you to submit an image of your sightings.

Features:

  • IveGot1 allows for both online and offline reporting with reports saved on your phone for uploading when you have network connectivity.
  • Images and information on Florida's worst non-native invasive animals and plants.
  • Real-time point distribution maps centered on your current location.

Get Involved - Join the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council or your local Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) through the Florida Invasive Species Partnership.

Powered by EDDMapS - The University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health's Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System. EDDMapS allows for real time tracking of invasive species occurrences using local and national distribution maps and electronic early detection reporting tools.

Mojave Desert Tortoise

The Mojave Desert Tortoise application is a tool for people to use when they out in the desert and happen to come across this threatened species. This solution allows the user to become better educated about the species and then share their finding with government on a voluntary basis. The application once first loaded will ask the user to complete an anonymous five question survey which those results will be shared with the Fish and Wildlife agency of the United States. Once that survey is completed the user will not see that again and will be taken to the home screen. From the home screen the user can chose to take a photo, click on additional information on the species or learn about the groups that help to develop this application. Our intent with this application is to give the user an opportunity to submit their findings of this rare species and learn interesting facts as well.

mPing

The National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) and the Precipitation Identification Near the Ground project (W-PING) have created this app to collect data from volunteers who are interested in watching and reporting on precipitation.

This app and associated web pages are your portal to providing observations to the research meteorologists at NSSL that will help us develop and refine algorithms that use the newly upgraded dual-polarization NEXRAD radars to detect and report on the type of precipitation that you see falling.

The basic idea is simple: NSSL will collect radar data from NEXRAD radars in your area along with sounding data from our models during storm events, and use your data to develop and validate new and better algorithms.

Why? Because the radars cannot see close to the ground at far distances and because automated surface sensors are only at airports. But the people affected by winter weather are everywhere so we need you to tell us what is happening where you are.

All you need to do is use this app to select the precipitation type. Tell NSSL what is hitting the ground. NSSL scientists will compare your report with what the radar has detected and what our models think the atmosphere is doing, and use it to develop new technologies and techniques to determine what kind of precipitation such as snow, ice, rain or hail and its size is falling where.

Satellite Insight

“Satellite Insight” was created for the GOES-R mission (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite, R series), under development at Goddard Space Flight Center as a joint NASA and NOAA effort. Educational as well as entertaining, the game challenges players to keep up with the stream of data from GOES-R’s six main instruments.

Colored blocks falling into columns on a grid represent small pieces of data. To save lives and protect expensive instruments, the GOES-R weather satellite must not lose any data. Users bundle like data types together by tapping to select three or more contiguous same-colored blocks, then tap on the GOES-R satellite to store the data before the grid overflows. Data blocks fall slowly at first, but arrive faster as the game continues. Each speed-up also brings a power-up tool players can use at any time to help clear the grid. They keep the game going as long as they can and try to beat their best time.

The game builds awareness of this important technical resource that most people never hear about. The game instructions also include basic information about GOES-R and geostationary orbits, as well as links to The Space Place, the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s website for elementary school kids; and SciJinks, the website about weather and Earth science for middle-school kids jointly sponsored by NASA and NOAA.

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders)

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is a mobile application designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents.

First responders in general, and HAZMAT units in particular, must make many decisions quickly in handling hazardous-materials incidents. They need accurate information about the hazardous substances, the emergency resources available, and the surrounding environmental conditions to save lives and minimize the impact on the environment and physical property. The WISER application extracts content from TOXNET’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), an authoritative, peer-reviewed information resource maintained by the National Library of Medicine, and places that information into the hands of those who need it most.

Features of WISER

* Rapid access to the most important information about a hazardous substance by an intelligent synopsis engine and display called “Key Info”

* Intuitive, simple, logical user interface developed by working with experienced first responders

* Comprehensive decision support, including guidance on immediate actions necessary to save lives and protect the environment

* Access to NLM’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), which contains detailed peer-reviewed information on hazardous substances

* User Profiles enable users to specify the role they are currently playing at the scene of an incident: first responder, HAZMAT specialist, or EMS specialist. The key information presented to the user about a substance varies depending on this role, so that the information most relevant to the respective job can be quickly accessed.

* Radiological and biological substance support.

* Mobile support, providing first responders critical information where they need it, when they need it.
