Rangel Recognizes American Diabetes Month

Washington, D.C. –Congressman Charles Rangel released the following statement in recognition of American Diabetes Month, which takes place in November:

"American Diabetes month is a great opportunity to raise the awareness within our communities about the seriousness of this disease that currently affects nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States; this means that 8.3% of the American people suffer from this disease. Diabetes is the principal cause of blindness, kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart conditions and stroke, and various other nervous system diseases. Also it contributes greatly to the nation's number one cause of death.

It is time to join forces to raise the education on diabetes prevention. In New York, diabetes has become an epidemic.  In 2008, 550,000 New Yorkers reported being diagnosed with diabetes and today over 700,000 New Yorkers are diagnosed with this disease. These numbers are on the rise, especially among Hispanics and African Americans. The education about this disease will prevent the increase in the number of cases. We can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes through a healthy lifestyle, by having a healthy nutrition diet and participating in physical activities.

In Congress I remain committed to develop programs that will focus on education, research, prevention and treatment for our community and America. By passing the Affordable Care Act, we have been able to ensure that all Americans can have their healthcare assistance. Let's join a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about diabetes.
