Stressing the significance of the solid foundation laid for future development in the Arctic, U.S. Senator Mark Begich discussed Shell’s decision to forgo drilling into hydrocarbon zones this year on CNBC’s Squawk Box this morning.
“People have said for years that drilling would never happen in the Arctic but it is happening now. While Shell has pulled back from drilling for the season, it indicates they are following the rules we have set out for them to operate under, both in regards to equipment and encroaching sea ice,” said Begich.
“I was born and raised in this state and our focus is to do it right: make sure it is environmentally safe, follow the rules, and respect the Alaskans living a subsistence lifestyle. Shell’s work this year marks significant regulatory progress – progress we haven’t seen in decades. They have begun paving the way for future development next year and for years to come.”
