U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today issued the following statement after it was announced that areas of Southern Utah have been deemed a federal disaster area as a result of flooding which occurred on September 11, 2012:

"I saw the storm-damaged communities in Southern Utah first-hand last month, and there was no doubt in my mind that they reached the threshold required to receive additional assistance. The areas were devastated by the September storm and its aftermath, and my heart goes out to all those affected by the flooding. These communities have my commitment to continue working to ensure that they have the resources they need to again become whole."

Utah Governor Gary Herbert requested the disaster declaration, which allows Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts, and Hatch was in contact with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials to support the request.
