Harkin Announces $5 Million Grant to Improve Child Welfare Services for Low- Income Families in Iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced today that Four Oaks Family and Children’s Services in Cedar Rapids will be awarded $1 million per year for five years by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Children and Families (ACF.)  The grant will fund a five-year project to provide supportive services and affordable housing to low-income children and families in Iowa at risk of entering the child welfare system.   Harkin helped secure funds for this program as Chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds HHS.

“This funding will help Four Oaks advance their mission to help Iowa children become successful and responsible adults,” said Senator Harkin. “Four Oaks takes a comprehensive approach that addresses the many challenges low-income families face and this will ultimately help keep families together and children out of the child welfare system.”

The Four Oaks Family and Children’s Services organization serves the entire State of Iowa, totaling more than 14,000 people each year.
