The state is expecting to get walloped by Hurricane Sandy and officials are already closing down schools and telling employers to allow their workers to stay home.

On Sunday afternoon, Mayor Thomas Menino announced Boston Public Schools will be closed Monday, October 29, and all non-essential city employees should not report to work.

Menino said he urged residents to take the necessary precautions in preparation for severe weather expected to impact Boston early Monday morning, through Tuesday. The National Weather Service has announced coastal flood and high wind warnings for the area, both effective 6 a.m. Monday.

“After assessing the most updated report from the National Weather Service, and out of concern for the safety of Boston residents, Boston Public Schools will be closed Monday and only essential personnel will report to City Hall,” Menino said in a statement. “I urge Boston employers to assist the city in keeping residents safe, and allow employees to work from home.”

The mayor is currently in the hospital being treated for a virus. He has been monitoring the weather and making preparations for the city of Boston from his hospital bed. According to reports, Menino is expected to be alright, and should be released from the hospital this week.

Boston residents should register for emergency notifications from Alert Boston atwww.cityofboston.gov/alertboston, or follow @notifyboston on Twitter for updates. Residents can also call the Mayor’s 24-hour hotline (617-635-4500) with any storm-related issues or concerns.

Some colleges and universities in Massachusetts also announced early Sunday that they would be closing their doors Monday after getting the latest information about the hurricane.

So far, UMass Dartmouth, Endicott College and Salem State University have announced that there will be no school for students on Monday.

“Endicott will be closed tomorrow (Monday), due to safety concerns over Hurricane Sandy. Stay tuned for further updates, and be safe!” officials wrote on the Endicott College Facebook page.

At the airport, Logan Airport Officials are reminding passengers to check with airlines to see if flights are cancelled.

“Airlines are canceling lots of flights tomorrow and Tuesday. Check with your airline on flight status before heading to Logan. Stay safe and dry and tell Sandy to scram!” Logan officials wrote on their Facebook page on Sunday.

Amtrak services are also being suspended, according to transportation officials.

“All Amtrak Acela Express, Northeast Regional, Keystone and Shuttle services are canceled for trains originating on Oct. 29,” according to Amtrak representatives.

Empire Service, Adirondack, Vermonter, Ethan Allen and Pennsylvanian train services have been suspended due to Hurricane Sandy, as well.
