Military Service Academies

The deadline for submission of all required documentation is December 1.

Each year, Senator Sanders receives dozens of inquiries from young Vermonters who wish to attend a military service academy. One of the application requirements of all of the U.S. service academies (except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy) is a political nomination, and the most common type of nomination is a Congressional one.

Please note that an application deadline applies; the links for each service academy provide information about deadlines and other application requirements. Also please note that Senator Sanders generally considers applications only from Vermont residents and children of Vermont residents.

Here are the steps to follow in seeking a nomination from Senator Sanders to the service academies:

  1. Contact Senator Sanders in writing at his Burlington office, expressing your interest in receiving a nomination to one of the academies, noting which academy.
  2. You MUST simultaneously apply directly to each service academy individually. Therefore you should request admissions information from each academy to which you plan to apply by writing to them at the following addresses:
  3. United States Naval Academy
    USNA Candidate Guidance Office
    Annapolis, MD 21402-5018

    United States Air Force Academy
    Admissions Office
    USAF Academy, CO 80840-5025

    United States Merchant Marine Academy
    Office of Admissions
    Kings Point, NY 11024-1699

West Point - United States Military Academy
    Admissions Office
    600 Thayer Road
    West Point, NY 10996-9902

  4. You need to submit the following to Senator Sanders' Burlington office in order to complete your nomination file:
    • a nomination application, downloaded in PDF format, printed out and faxed to our office. Click here for a copy.
    • a copy of your high school transcripts, including your G.P.A., the size of your class, and your ranking within that class
    • an official copy of your SAT scores
(If you have already taken the SAT examination, you should contact the College Entrance Examination Board and request that a copy of your scores be sent to Code 3764. If you will be taking the SAT examination, please list 3764 as one of the recipients of your scores at that time.)
    • 3 letters of recommendation:
      • The first letter should be from a teacher, principal, or guidance counselor.
      • The second should be from an employer, coach, or extracurricular faculty advisor.
      • The third letter can be from any person of your choice.

Please forward the requested information at your earliest convenience. We do ask that you submit information as you compile it, instead of waiting until you have everything together.

The deadline for submission of all required documentation is December 1.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • In order to attend a service academy, you must be accepted by that academy. A political nomination is only one of the requirements for matriculation at one of our nation's service academies.
  • As noted above, the Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is the only U.S. service academy that does not require a political nomination or appointment to attend it. For information about the USCGA, you may write to:
    • United States Coast Guard Academy
      Admissions Office
      New London, CT 06320
