U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee and a senior member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee questioned U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on the Pentagon's commitment to ensuring accurate mental health diagnoses and treatment for servicemembers as the military continues to face an epidemic of military suicides. Murray's questioning, which comes one week after the Pentagon announced that there had already been 154 active duty military suicides this year, focused on expanding a comprehensive Army review of mental health evaluations and diagnoses and new Army directives on mental health care to other branches of the military. The Army's recently announced review comes on the heels of a review of mental health diagnoses at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington state that has already returned PTSD diagnoses to over a hundred servicemembers who had in many cases been accused of faking symptoms.

  • How to decrease disproportionate veteran suicide rates and rates of mental disease diagnosis in one simple step: stop sending Americans to fight useless wars for Israel.

  • wow. big job to go back to 2001 and review all cases. we need to make sure that people are protected during that process. these cases need to be dealt with appropriately. please make sure workers are qualified to handle these situations.

  • Thank you, Senator Murray! You are what makes the system work. Hold his feet to the fire, and if he does not deliver, you hand him his head on a platter.

  • Do dog tags melt in jet fuel?

  • Thank-you, Senator Murray, for sticking up for the service people who are caught in the system. I so appreciate your pushing for action! Proud to have you as my Senator!

  • Medical people do not understand suicide and prescribe drugs, which still keep the person in fantasy stopping the ability to mature from being drugged. Therefore, when I help people as a spiritual counselor I share my experience, strength and hope from a person who has been there and understands. Most psychologists have letters behind their name, but have no clue as to the dynamics from their own experience. There is a real solution that is disregarded.

  • Keep up the good work!
