Superstorm Sandy Recovery Resource Center

Superstorm Sandy made landfall in New Jersey in the evening of Monday, October 29, 2012, and wreaked havoc on communities across the state. While the damage suffered is devastating, I know New Jersey will rebound. My office has compiled a list of resources available to New Jersey residents as they recover from Sandy. Please take advantage of the resources available to storm victims.

Federal Disaster Assistance: New Jerseyans impacted by Superstorm Sandy should go to www.disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362) to apply for federal aid.

The website consolidates the application process across several federal agencies, shortens the time it takes to apply, and allows you to check the progress of your applications online.

While not everyone is eligible for federal aid right now, FEMA will hold all applications and process them once additional residents become eligible as a result of disaster designations for more New Jersey counties.

General Information: For general information relevant to New Jerseyans, including road closures, transit information, drinking water advisories, and shelter locations, call 2-1-1 or visit www.nj211.org/hurricane.cfm.

Shelters: The Red Cross is working closely with local, state, and federal emergency management teams to provide shelters throughout New Jersey. To find a Red Cross shelter operating in your community, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or check online at http://app.redcross.org/nss-app/.

Additional shelter information is available through the New Jersey New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (OEM) or your County OEM. See below for more information.

Donate and Volunteer: We can recover more quickly by working with one another and lending support wherever we can. For volunteer opportunities and information about donating, call 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397) or visit www.fema.gov/howtohelp.

Job Opportnities Assisting with Clean-Up: The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has provided emergency funding for New Jersey to hire approximately 1,000 temporary workers to assist with Superstorm Sandy clean-up activities.

Job-seekers should report to local One-Stop Career Centers. They also may send e-mails to sandyhelp@dol.state.nj.us, log onto www.Jobs4Jersey.com or call 1-877-682-6238 or 1-800-233-5005. Please be patient if lines are busy.

Business Resources: If your business has equipment or expertise to contribute to recovery efforts, use the FEMA Industry Liaison Program here.

Utilities: Power companies are working to restore electricity, but it will take time for everyone to get their power back. Notify your power company immediately of any outages and keep in touch until your power is restored.

  • JCP&L: 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) or 1-800-545-7738, www.jcp-l.com, and @JCP_L on Twitter

Power Outages: FEMA has compiled tips for what to do during and after a power outage here.

Help for Homeowners and Borrowers: To find out if you are available for mortgage relief due to Superstorm Sandy, contact your mortgage servicer - the company to which you send your monthly mortgage payment. If your loan is owned by Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae, you can contact them for information about services you may be eligible for, including loan and foreclosure forbearance. For Freddie Mac, call 1-800-FREDDIE (1-800-373-3343). For Fannie Mae, call 1-800-7FANNIE (1-800-732-6643) or go here.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued a foreclosure moratorium and has made mortgage and home rehabilitation insurance available for some homes. Learn more about these programs here.

After A Flood: FEMA has compiled tips for returning to your home or neighborhood after a flood here.

The National Flood Insurance program has instructions for filing a flood insurance claim here.

Price Gouging: New Jersey law prohibits merchants from increasing prices by 10 percent or more during an emergency or for 30 days thereafter. To report price gouging, call 1-800-242-5846.

Consumer Assistance: Consumer protection information for avoiding scams or hiring home improvement contractors is available from the Division of Consumer Affairs here.

Pet Rescue Hotline: Residents who left their pets behind when evacuating their homes in advance of Superstorm Sandy should call 1-855-407-4787 (1-855-407-HSUS). Official animal rescue personnel are being made available to assist these residents locate their pets and bring them safely to a shelter.

Local Services: To access emergency, cleanup, shelter, and recovery services in your area, visit the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (OEM) here or contact your County Office of Emergency Management (OEM):
