Cardin, Mikulski Announce Federal Funding To Equip Federalsburg Police Department With K-9 Unit

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced that the Federalsburg Police Department has been awarded a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (USDARD) grant of $35,000 to purchase a K-9 unit and a new K-9 patrol equipped vehicle.

“Equipping our first responders is one of my top priorities and K-9 units provide law enforcement with an effective tool,” Senator Cardin said. “Our rural first responders face unique challenges and situations. The Federalsburg Police Department will now have the added capabilities that come with a K-9 unit.”

“I’m on the side of first responders. I believe if you are willing to put your life on the line every day, you should never feel short-changed by your government,” Senator Mikulski said. “These federal dollars will help the Federalsburg Police Department purchase a K-9 unit and help them better serve their community.”

“Federalsburg, like many small towns in America, is aided greatly by USDARD funding,” said George “Happy” Mayer, Federalsburg Grant Administrator. “USDARD understands the needs of rural America, and does its best to cater to those needs; I think this grant is a prime example.”

In addition to the federal funds, Federalsburg will contribute an additional $12,725 to bring the total cost to $48,635.  The K-9 officer will collaborate with officers from nearby jurisdictions and from the county to greatly expand law enforcement capabilities. Federalsburg has been working to receive this grant for three years.

The Rural Development program seeks to improve the economy and quality of life in rural America through community investment.
