U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) released the following statement on Constitution Day:

“America was the first nation founded on an idea -- the principle that our rights as free and equal citizens come not from government, but from our Creator.  Our Constitution gave form to that timeless principle, by creating a government of limited, enumerated powers.

“Constitution Day is a day to reflect on the unfinished business of forming a ‘more perfect union.’

“The so-called power of the purse is a solemn responsibility reserved to Congress in Article One of the Constitution.  Unfortunately, the U.S. Senate has abandoned the responsible exercise of that power by failing even to pass a budget for three straight years, while the House has acted.

“For the U.S. Senate, the most fitting tribute to the Constitution would be to start governing again, doing the work the Constitution envisioned.
