Senator Webb Announces Grant to Rebuild High Knob Observation Tower

July 1, 2011

Washington, D.C- Senator Jim Webb today announced $50,000 in federal funding to help rebuild the High Knob Observation Tower, which was destroyed by arson in 2007.  The grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) will compliment funds pledged by state and local agencies.  According to the High Knob Tower Enhancement Corporation, the reconstruction project is expected to lead to 7,500 new visitors and more than $400,000 in tourism revenue each year.

“This grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission will help boost tourism in Wise County and surrounding areas,” said Senator Webb. “I will continue to support investment in projects that strengthen the economy and communities of Appalachia.”

Senator Webb first joined former Congressman Rick Boucher in supporting the High Knob Reconstruction Project more than two years ago. Senator Webb’s office has worked closely with the High Knob Enhancement Corporation and state and local officials toward approval of today’s grant.

In May, Senator Webb also joined a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators in supporting continued investment in the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).

Lu Ellsworth, chair of the High Knob Enhancement Board of Trustees, said the ARC grant was critically needed to begin rebuilding the High Knob Observation Tower.  "With this important announcement, the U.S. Forest Service will be able to finalize arrangements for constructing this important regional economic and recreational asset,” said Ellsworth.

The High Knob Observation Tower was originally built in the 1930s at the site of one of the few remaining fire towers located in the Appalachian mountains.  Since its construction, the tower has been a landmark for Wise County and the surrounding region.

The High Knob Tower Enhancement project will focus on the reconstruction of this local landmark and will lay the groundwork for a comprehensive tourism project. Local leaders plan for the tower project to be a stimulus for future developments such as an artisan center, visitor center, and environmental education center.
