Sen. Webb Statement on Extension of Unemployment Insurance

July 20, 2010

Senator Webb, a member of the Joint Economic Committee, today issued the following statement following Senate approval of an extension of unemployment benefits to November 30, 2010:

“I am committed to supporting policies that will help end the economic crisis and restore basic fairness for all Americans.  While Congress works to promote economic growth and facilitate job creation, it is also important to provide assistance to the millions of Americans in Virginia and across the country who have lost their jobs. For this reason I have consistently supported extensions of unemployment insurance. Though Virginia has an better-than-average rate of 7.1% unemployment, communities in Southside and Southwest Virginia are experiencing much higher rates.  This legislation provides needed relief to help the thousands of Virginians who have lost their jobs get back on their feet and rejoin the workforce.”
