Social Security
Social Security is one of the most successful government programs ever established. Since its passage in 1935, it has greatly reduced poverty and hardship for seniors, and given succeeding generations the security of knowing they will have the foundation for a secure retirement. More than 52 million Americans, and about 2 million Michiganians, receive Social Security benefits. I am committed to making sure that future generations enjoy the protections of Social Security.
Some have tried to portray Social Security as a program in crisis as a way to argue for benefit cuts or privatization. Social Security is not facing an imminent crisis. In 2010, I opposed tax-cut legislation that provided tax breaks for the wealthy because paying for those tax cuts could threaten the stability of Social Security.
For decades, Social Security has promised Americans an insurance program that guaranteed support for all workers in the face of retirement and disability. That is a promise we must keep.
