Chair Landrieu Issues SBA Disaster Information for Gulf Coast Residents Impacted by Hurricane Isaac

WASHINGTON - Today U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, Chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, issued comprehensive information on U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster programs for businesses, homeowners, and renters impacted by Hurricane Isaac.  Following President Obama’s disaster declaration, individuals and businesses of 22 Louisiana parishes and 10 Mississippi counties are now eligible for disaster assistance.

“After camping out over southeast Louisiana for almost 60 hours, Hurricane Isaac left a trail of broken homes and flooded businesses in some areas that saw minimal damage from Hurricane Katrina,” said Senator Landrieu. “I look forward to working with the Small Business Administration and local officials to help folks impacted by Hurricane Isaac rebuild their shuttered businesses, flooded homes, and impacted communities.”

Individuals and businesses in declared areas may be eligible for low-interest loans including:  up to $200,000 for homeowners to repair primary residences; up to $40,000 for homeowners and renters to replace damaged personal property; up to $2 million for businesses and private non-profits to repair or replace disaster-damaged property; and up to $2 million in working capital for small businesses, private non-profits, and small aquaculture businesses to assist them with disaster recovery. To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, Louisiana residents must call FEMA at 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Those interested in SBA disaster assistance may contact the SBA Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 or visit SBA’s website at www.sba.gov

In addition to disaster loans, SBA has also announced that businesses in declared disaster areas may be able to defer loan payments on existing disaster loans for up to one year.  The business must be in an area in which there has been a disaster declaration, and demonstrate it has been adversely impacted by Hurricane Isaac. As of August 31, 2012, there were 6,194 outstanding SBA business disaster loans in Louisiana resulting from major disasters since 2005.  These outstanding loans total $808,940,000.

The application deadline in Louisiana is October 30, 2012, for Physical Damage disaster assistance and May 29, 2013, for Economic Injury disaster assistance.  In Mississippi, the deadline is October 31, 2012, for Physical Damage disaster assistance and May 30, 2013, for Economic Injury disaster assistance.  Today, the SBA, Louisiana Department of Economic Development (LED) and the Louisiana Small Business Development Centers (LSBDCs) announced the opening of nine Business Recovery Centers (BRCs) to provide a wide range of services to businesses impacted by Hurricane Isaac.  Several centers will open Thursday, September 6, 2012, with additional centers opening over the next several days.  Additional information on locations is available below.
