Senators Stabenow, Levin Announce Support for Wayne Police Department to Hire Police Officers
U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin today announced support for the Wayne Police Department to hire and retain law enforcement officers. The grant comes from the Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.
This year, the program has a unique requirement: all new officers hired under the grant must be military veterans that have served at least 180 days of active military service, which occurred on or after September 11, 2001.
"Today's announcement is especially rewarding," said Stabenow. "Not only will Wayne be able to hire more police officers to keep families safe, but military veterans who have served since 2001 will be provided new job opportunities. It is so fitting that those who have kept our country safe and served in the military should be given the opportunity to come home and serve the public as police officers.
"This grant means greater safety for the community and greater opportunity for veterans who have already shown a dedication to service," Levin said. "By improving public safety and doing right by our veterans, we're meeting two of our most important priorities."
The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant is intended to support the hiring and retention of full-time sworn officers. For more information on the COPS Program, visit: www.cops.usdoj.gov.
The Wayne Police Department will receive $250,000 to hire and retain new officers.
