Immigration

Immigration

Immigration is a vital component that helped found our country and continues to make it great. We must insist that those who enter our country do so through the appropriate legal channels to ensure order and our national security. The federal government has failed in its responsibility to properly implement and enforce such laws, which has resulted in a burden on the States and taxpayers. Moreover, the aftertaste of debating "comprehensive" immigration reform packages has lowered the appetite for Congress to address this problem.

In light of this context, I support a plan that takes on the various immigration related challenges separately.  First, we must end the practice of birthright citizenship.  I have sponsored legislation that would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to do that.  Second, we must strengthen our borders and enforce the law to discourage individuals from coming here illegally.  I have cosponsored the E-Verify Act which would ensure businesses are not employing illegal labor.  Finally, much more is needed to fix our broken and inefficient immigration system. I support significant reform of the process so people aren't waiting a decade or more to find out if they can come into the country legally.
