Murray Meets with Veterans in North Central WA

Senator Murray attended a town hall meeting in Wenatchee with veterans from Douglas, Chelan, Grant and Okanogan counties. Murray discussed many issues facing WA veterans today including the number one concern for veterans in North Central WA, better access to VA healthcare.




According to records kept by local veterans organizations, there are over 21,000 veterans who call North-Central Washington ?home?. Veterans who need healthcare services must access it through VA facilities in Seattle and Spokane. Both facilities are over 150 miles from Wenatchee, and further for veterans located in Douglas and Okanogan Counties. Travel to Seattle is especially difficult as it involves travel over two mountain passes. Waiting times for initial appointments at Veteran?s Facilities in Seattle and Spokane have exceeded an average of 10 months.

Addressing Rural Healthcare

"There is no doubt that our state is facing a health care crisis," Sen. Murray said. "I'm here today because I want to bring together patients, doctors, and leaders in the community to focus on solutions we can achieve together."

Sen. Murray spoke about recent legislation regarding Medicare, prescription drugs, the nursing shortage, and other relevant local health issues.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Sen. Murray has secured federal funding for healthcare in Washington state. (08/12/02)

Improving Veterans' Health Care

Senator Murray is working to help veterans get the medical care they need. One of her proposals was adopted by the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee on which she serves.

Murray's successful amendment to the "Veteran's Long-Term Care and Mental Health Enhancement Act" would create a pilot program to make available trained medical staff every week for veterans in Whatcom, Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, and Kittitas counties.

The Veterans' bill now moves on to the full Senate. (06/06/02)
