Rangel Statement on Ramadan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Charles Rangel issued the following statement to mark the observance of Ramadan which began on August 1 and lasts through August 29, 2011:

"I extend my best wishes to all my Muslim friends and neighbors in my district and across our great nation as they observe Ramadan this month. It is a time of joy and reflection as families come together to reaffirm their faith while practicing self-discipline, control, sacrifice and empathy for the less fortunate. These are all values shared by all people and faiths throughout the world.

New York City is home to approximately 600,000 Muslims and nearly 200 mosques. The Islamic Cultural Center of New York, which stands proudly in Manhattan, was the first mosque to be built in New York City. Its leader, Imam Mohammed Shamsi Ali has continued a tradition of leading interfaith dialogues among Muslim leaders, pastors, priests and rabbis. Our community is also blessed to have the guidance of many Muslim spiritual leaders, such as: Iman Izak-El Mu'eed Pasha, Spiritual Leader of the Masjid Malcolm Shabazz Mosque; Imam Al-Hajj Talib 'Abdur-Rashid, Spiritual & Religious Leader of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, Inc.; Minister Abdul Hafeez Muhammad, Spiritual Leader of the Nation of Islam's Muhammad Mosque No. 7; and Iman Souleimane Konate, Spiritual Leader of the Masjid Aqsa Mosque and Director of the Council of African Imams.

As Ramadan is observed by millions of Americans this month, I hope we can all take the time to reflect on the shared values and interests we have with different communities and faiths that make our nation great. Let us remember our commitment to personal liberty and religious freedom for all persons who call America their home. To all my friends and neighbors in the Muslim community, I wish you all a month of peace, happiness and blessings for you and your families. Ramadan Kareem."
