    shows what is presumably the same stand and possibly the same cop. If so, this copy has been annotated by hand to identify Officer Coggershall.

    "Newport Daily News, 8 Aug 1950. Freeborn Coggeshall, 71, who retired 40 years ago as a patrolman after 40 years on the police force looks to the modern-day traffice stand as his greatest achievement. In 1912 he invented a stand that he believes was the first in the country. In 1915 members of the summer colony presented him with an umbrella to go over the stand.
