AKAKA GIVES FLOOR SPEECH UPDATE ON VETERANS' LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI) spoke on the Senate floor today regarding the 110th Congress's accomplishments and pending business on veterans' issues.  Akaka is the Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee.

Akaka noted various Congressional accomplishments for veterans young and old, including:

  • Providing the largest funding increase to veterans' programs in the history of the Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Enactment of the 21st Century GI Bill for post-9/11 veterans
  • Wounded warrior provisions such as the doubling of automatic health care for returning troops, from two-years to five, as well as expanded outreach to veterans of the Guard and Reserve

Akaka also brought attention to the veterans' bills still pending in the House and Senate, and urged action before this year's adjournment.
