Improving Border Security and Efficiency:
Trusted Traveler Program Cards from GPO
GPO was selected by the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP), to create and produce hundreds of thousands of Trusted Traveler Program Cards. Using these cards, pre-approved, low-risk travelers enjoy expedited entry into the United States from Canada and Mexico. The card program strengthens our borders while making it easier for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign travelers to cross them.
NEXUS cards permit pre-approved travelers to use priority lanes when crossing borders between the United States and Canada. The SENTRI card streamlines crossing borders between the United States and Mexico. FAST cards expedite travel for pre-approved commercial truck drivers, who enter the U.S. from Canada or Mexico in dedicated lanes.
 
GPO designed the Trusted Traveler Program card using a combination of printed and electronic security features. Some of the printed features can be seen, others cannot. An antenna and integrated circuit embedded within the card help to verify the identity of the bearer to Border Protection Officers.

Encrypted at CBP, identity information is transmitted over secure lines to GPO, where it is decrypted and converted for personalization. This takes place in the GPO Secure Credential Center, where all work is done or managed by government employees in a secure government-owned facility.

Optical security features create a striking effect of movement and color. This helps Border Crossing Officers quickly validate that both traveler and credential are authentic.
 
Once the Trusted Traveler Program Cards are personalized, GPO attaches them to inserts, combines the cards with letters, inserts them into an envelope addressed to the card recipient, and prepares the envelopes for mailing directly to end-users.

In 2009, GPO was honored for its work on the Trusted Traveler Program by Government Security News magazine in their annual Homeland Security Awards competition, "Most Effective Border Security Program, Project or Agency."
