Information for Travelers with Physical or Visual Disabilities
2002
Introduction
Information contained in this reference circular is based on descriptive literature
provided by companies and organizations offering services to travelers with
physical or visual disabilities.
Access guides to specific cities and tourist sites are not included as they
are too numerous to mention. Such guides are typically published by local chambers
of commerce and may be found in public libraries or requested directly from
the issuing organization. In addition, access guides covering specific foreign
countries may be obtained from tourist offices that many foreign countries operate
in Washington, D.C., or New York City.
Only print books and magazines issued in 1997 or later are included. Recorded
and braille travel books that date from 1989 or later may be borrowed by eligible
residents of the United States from a network of libraries serving readers who
are unable to read standard print because of visual or physical disabilities.

Golden access passport is a lifetime pass for citizens or permanent
residents of the United States who are blind or have some other disability
to national parks, monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, and national
wildlife refuges that charge an entrance fee. The pass must be obtained in
person at a federal area where an entrance fee is charged and applicants must
show proof of medically determined permanent disabilities or eligibilities
for receiving the benefits under federal law. This pass admits the individual
and any accompanying passengers in a private vehicle if a park has a per vehicle
entrance fee. It also provides a 50 percent discount on federal-use fees charged
for facilities and services.
Golden age passport is a lifetime entrance pass for citizens
or permanent residents of the United States who are 62 years or older to national
parks, monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, and national wildlife
refuges that charge an entrance fee. This pass must be obtained in person
at a federal area where an entrance fee is charged and applicants must show
proof of age. There is a one time processing fee of $10. The pass also provides
a 50 percent discount on federal-uses fees charged for facilities and services.

of all ages and abilities in twenty states and Canada. Trains recreation service
providers on implementing integrated outdoor programs. Reviews parks, trails,

Transportation Services
Air:
Travelers in need of special arrangements should contact airlines at least
twenty-four hours in advance of departure for wheelchairs, portable oxygen,
travel with a guide dog, etc. Guide dogs travel and sit with their owners free
of charge. Airlines recommend that passengers check in at the terminal well
in advance of scheduled boarding time. Airlines are required to provide passengers
with disabilities with assistance departing and arriving, including personnel
and equipment. Airline companies may be contacted through toll-free numbers
or local offices, found in local telephone directories.
Automobile:
All major car rental agencies rent cars with hand controls (for left- or right-handed
use). Cars are available at most major U.S. cities with pick-up and drop-off
varying from agency to agency. Advance notice (varying from twenty-four to seventy-two
hours) is required. Car rental companies may be contacted through toll-free
numbers or local offices, found in local telephone directories.
Accessible van rentals are available from a number of companies with locations
across the United States and Puerto Rico. Most offer daily and weekly rates
on a variety of wheelchair accessible, full-sized, and mini-vans. Advance notice
is recommended. Contact company directly for current availability. Three of

Resources on the Internet, and Gimp on the Go have comprehensive listings of
accessible van rental companies.
Disabled Driver's Mobility Guide (see bibliography for ordering information)
has a list of resources and driving aids available in the United States and
Canada.
Bus:
Bus carriers are willing to provide necessary assistance for those who request
it in boarding and handling baggage. They generally require a written statement
from a physician verifying the need for an attendant to travel with an individual
who is disabled. Advance arrangements should be made by calling the departure
terminal for special assistance and check-in at the terminal well in advance
of scheduled departure time. Terminal accessibility varies from city to city.
The major U.S. carrier is Greyhound: 800-231-2222 or 800-345-3109 TDD.
Greyhound has lift-equipped buses to and from all its destinations, except
in a limited set of circumstances. Wheelchairs or other equipment are allowed,
but must be folded and stored out of the way while the bus is in motion. There
is no additional charge for a wheelchair or other special equipment.

Ship:
Prospective travelers should contact the passenger line or their travel agent
about any requirements for medical certification, accessibility of shipboard
facilities, or wheelchair regulations in various ports.
Train:
The major U.S. carrier is Amtrak. For information and reservation call 800-872-7245
or 800-523-6590 TDD, or visit <www.amtrak.com>.
Amtrak offers a discount for passengers with disabilities equal to 15 percent
off the lowest available fare. Official documentation of disability is required.
The company recommends booking by phone to make sure all needs are met. Publishes
