In Brief

Book subject categories now listed before one-line annotations in TBT

The book subject category will now appear first, before the one-line annotation, so that readers of Talking Book Topics may know the subject of a title before they read the annotation.

The following information about the cassette magazine transition to digital cartridges has been reprinted from a previous issue of TBT for the benefit of readers.

Cassette magazines moving to digital flash cartridges

Toward the end of 2012, NLS will begin transitioning the audio magazine program to the digital cartridge media. This means that upon completion of the transition in early 2013 all audio magazine subscribers will need to have a digital talking-book player to continue receiving their magazines. Contact your local cooperating library to get a digital player now, if you do not already have one.

The audio magazine cartridges are light blue and will ship in a dark red container with a distinctive logo. The cartridge may contain several issues of the audio magazines to which you subscribe. When a cartridge with more than one magazine is inserted into a digital talking-book player, you will hear instructions for navigating among the multiple periodicals on that cartridge. Magazine cartridges are recycled and must be returned. To return the cartridge, turn over the address card on the container and place the cartridge in its container for mailing. If cartridges are not returned your service may be disrupted.

Subscribers to Talking Book Topics on cassette will soon be receiving it on digital cartridge with their other audio magazines. The print order forms for Talking Book Topics will be mailed out separately from the magazine cartridge.

Newsstand

The following announcements may be of interest to readers. The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped reserves the right to publish announcements selectively, as space permits. The items mentioned, however, are not part of the NLS program and their listings do not imply endorsement.

Toll-free diabetes helpline

The Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation provides a toll-free helpline for non-emergency questions about the condition available from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, Eastern Time. Call 1-800-941-4635 to speak to a registered nurse who is a certified diabetes educator. Typical questions concern blood glucose goals, nutrition, medication regimens, and finding a diabetes doctor or research center.

Braille music course

Hadley School for the Blind is offering a new braille music course. Braille Music Basics is designed for sighted or partially sighted individuals who want to transcribe print music into braille, teach braille music to students, or support a braille-reading musician. The five-lesson class, which is free, was created by musician and braille transcriber Ruth Rozen. Completion of Braille Music Basics Diagnostic, which assesses a person’s ability to read print music and read and produce uncontracted braille, is a prerequisite for Braille Music Basics. For more information visit www.hadley.edu, call 1-800-526-9909, or e-mail student_services@hadley.edu.
