The Office of Scholarly Programs, in conjunction with the Dana Foundation, Heinz Family Philanthropies and the National Institute of Mental Health, sponsored a two-day conference, "Demons of the Mind: 21st Century Science vs. Depression," bringing together top neuroscientists and mental health experts to discuss mental depression.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Michael E. Thase is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. He has directed the Depression Treatment and Research Program at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic since its inception in 1987 and is now the chief of adult academic psychiatry. A fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Thase has received numerous honors in his field, including the Marie Eldredge Award from the American Psychiatric Association. He is also a member of many professional and scientific societies, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and the Society for Psychotherapy Research. Thase has co-authored more than 340 scientific articles and book chapters, as well as seven books. His published articles are featured in various journals, including Archives of General Psychiatry, the American Journal of Psychiatry and the British Journal of Psychiatry. He is the editor-in-chief of Psychopharmacology Bulletin.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Maurizio Fava is the associate chief of psychiatry for clinical research at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Depression Clinical and Research Program.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Benedetto Vitiello is the chief of the Child Treatment Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Dwight L. Evans is thte the Ruth Meltzer Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Philip S. Wang is an assistant professor in health care policy at Harvard Medical School and an assistant professor of medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is also an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.
