TITLE: The Changing Face of Christianity
SPEAKER: Lamin Sanneh
EVENT DATE: 03/10/2005
FORMAT: Video + Captions
RUNNING TIME: 36 minutes
DESCRIPTION:
Lamin Sanneh, holder of the Chair of Countries and Cultures of the South at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress, discussed "The Changing Face of Christianity: Africa, the West and the World," a volume offering nine new essays addressing Christianity's place and role in the world and their importance for the future of Christianity. Over the past century, Christianity's place and role has changed dramatically. In 1900, 80 percent of the world's Christians lived in Europe and North America. Today more than 60 percent of the world's Christians live outside of those continents. Sanneh's book calls for a re-examination of the way the story of Christianity is told, the methodological tools used for its analysis, its modes of expression and the role of Africa as the new Christian heartland.
Speaker Biography: In addition to his position as Chair of Countries and Cultures at the Kluge Center, Lamin Sanneh is professor of history and D. Willis James Professor of World Christianity at Yale University. He has written a number of books related to religion in Africa, including "Whose Religion Is Christianity?: The Gospel Beyond the West" and "The Crown and the Turban: Muslims and West African Pluralism."
