Hawaii became the 50th state in the Union on August 21, 1959. The state’s first two senators, Hiram Fong and Oren Long, were sworn into office on August 24, 1959. Hawaii’s longest-serving senator is Daniel Inouye (1963-present). Inouye is currently the Senate president pro tempore and served as his party’s conference secretary from 1977 to 1989. Hiram Fong was the first Asian Pacific American elected to the Senate.
