The First Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees the peoples' right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Senate received many petitions during the Civil War covering a wide-range of concerns. These documents are now part of the Records of the U.S. Senate housed at the Center for Legislative Archives, National Archives and Records Administration.
