Folk Heritage Collections in Crisis

In December of 2000 the American
Folklife Center and the American Folklore Society convened 100
invited experts to discuss the problems of endangered folklore
collections. This two-day symposium brought together not only folklorists
and ethnomusicologists, but also archivists, lawyers, sound engineers,
preservation specialists, and media specialists.

Our cross-disciplinary approach resulted in an educational experience
for all who attended, but more importantly the symposium produced
a set of action steps and resources. A real effort to address the
issues facing our ethnographic audio collections from this diverse
professional standpoint continues now, and is growing.
The American Folklife Center and its symposium partners, the
National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for
the Arts, the Council on Library and Information Resources, the
Recording Industry Association of America, and the GRAMMY Foundation,
are happy to share with you the proceedings of the first day of
the symposium.
