Function and Use: The agency created and maintained this series for the Department of Defense (DoD) as an automated repository of all official casualty information from both conflict and peacetime incidents. The records derive from information submitted by each of the military services on Department of Defense Form 1300, Individual Report of Casualty. The records are used to produce various standard and as-requested reports in support of DoD organizations, outside government agencies, Congress, the President, the media, and the general public.
Scope & Content Note: This series contains records of U.S. military officers and soldiers who died as a result of either a hostile or non-hostile occurrence in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, or War on Terrorism. These include the records of persons who were missing in action or prisoners of war in either the Korean War or the Vietnam War. Beginning in 1975, casualties considered as occurring during Peacetime were also included. The records also include deaths resulting from accident or illness. Since the casualties occurred worldwide, specific geographic references are not listed in this description. The records derive from information submitted by each of the military services on Department of Defense Form 1300, Individual Report of Casualty. The exact fields contained in each file vary slightly, but each record may include: the service member's name, service number, member service code, service name, rank or rate, pay grade, occupation, date of birth, gender, home of record (city, county, state or province, country), marital status, religion, race, ethnicity, casualty circumstances, casualty city, state or province and country, unit, duty, process date, death date, war or conflict, operation incident, location, closure date, aircraft type, hostile or non-hostile death indicator, casualty type and category, incident casualty reason, casualty category short name (CSN), body (recovered or not), Vietnam wall row and panel indicator, incident casualty category short name (ICSN), incident hostile or incident non-hostile death, and incident aircraft type.
