Wells Fargo

A century ago, Wells Fargo set up libraries for employees, who could request books shipped free of charge on the company's nationwide express network. Today, Wells Fargo still recognizes the importance of learning through reading. Since 1999, thousands of Wells Fargo team members have participated in Reading First, an interactive read-aloud program designed to support early childhood literacy and increase company volunteerism. Through the program, more than one million books have been read and donated to pre-K thru second-grade classroom libraries.

As part of the Wells Fargo Championship PGA tour event, Wells Fargo extended its Reading First program with Reading Above Par, which brought professional golfers and other special guest readers to events in Charlotte, North Carolina. Wells Fargo also sponsors summer reading programs at public libraries in Philadelphia and other cities. Wells Fargo continues to be one of America's largest financial contributors to nonprofits. In 2011, we invested $213.5 million in 19,000 nonprofits, including $50 million to educational organizations, with an additional $18.5 million in matched educational donations from team members, which Wells Fargo matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000 per team member. The Junior League of Washington

The Junior League of Washington (JLW) will kick off its centennial year by playing a major role at the National Book Festival providing more than 550 member volunteers to staff the event for the 11th consecutive year. In 1999, the JLW established literacy as its focus area and stated, "The Junior League of Washington will strive to lead, coordinate, and support programs in the metropolitan Washington, DC area that enhance the literacy skills in the community." Supporting the National Book Festival is a natural extension of the JLW's focus on literacy. This year, JLW members will volunteer more than 50,000 hours of service in the community addressing the cultural literacy needs of children and adults. Throughout its 100-year history, the JLW has raised more than $5 million for community programs and has been a vibrant force in the lives of women and children in the national capital area. In May 2012, JLW awarded $50,000 in grant funding to two local non-profits as part of JLW's continued efforts to improve literacy. In addition to awarding grants, the JLW's "Books for Bright Futures" program fosters literacy by donating over 2,000 books annually to community organizations. In 2012, the JLW is initiating an effort to provide 100,000 books to the Washington, DC community to commemorate its centennial year and to celebrate its focus area of literacy by providing books to children for reading at home.

The Junior League of Washington, a nonprofit organization with more than 2,200 members, is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Visit www.jlw.org (external link).
