Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier is a bilingual, multi-format English-Spanish digital library site that explores the history, geography, and culture of Spain and the interactions between Spain and the United States from the 15th century to the present. A cooperative effort between the National Library of Spain and the Library of Congress, the project is part of the Library of Congress Global Gateway initiative to build digital library partnerships with national libraries around the world.

This project explores the history of the Spanish presence in America from the first voyage of Columbus in 1492 to the continued exploration and settlement of California and the American Southwest in the early 19^th century. It is intended for use by schools and libraries and by the general public worldwide. Its objective is to present important primary source materials online—maps, manuscripts, rare books, prints, photographs, and other materials—relating to the history of Spain and Spain’s role in the exploration, settlement, and development of North America.

Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier grew out of a landmark agreement that was concluded in Seville in October 1999 by the Institución Colombina and the Library of Congress. The agreement established a digital collaboration aimed at making available to students, researchers, and lifelong learners unique documents from the cultural heritage of Spain and the United States. This initial step was followed by the conclusion of a collaborative agreement between the Library of Congress and the National Library of Spain. The signing of this agreement took place on February 24, 2000, on the occasion of the visit to Washington of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain at a ceremony in the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.

Historias Paralelas: España, Estados Unidos y la Frontera Americana : es una biblioteca digital, bilingüe y en formatos variados, que explora la historia, la geografía y la cultura españolas y las interacciones entre España y los Estados Unidos desde el siglo XV hasta nuestros días. Este es un programa de cooperación entre la Biblioteca Nacional de España y la Biblioteca del Congreso y forma parte del proyecto de la Biblioteca del Congreso llamado Global Gateway, una iniciativa para crear bibliotecas digitales en cooperación con otras bibliotecas nacionales.

El proyecto explora la historia de la presencia española en América desde el primer viaje de Colón en 1492 a la continua exploración y asentamiento de California y el suroeste americano a principios del siglo XIX. Está enfocado para uso de bibliotecas, escuelas y el público en general, en cualquier lugar del mundo. Su objetivo principal es presentar fuentes primarias en línea –como mapas, manuscritos, libros antiguos, fotografías y otros materiales—relacionadas con la historia de España y su papel en la exploración, asentamiento y desarrollo de América del Norte.

Este proyecto es el resultado de un acuerdo inicial firmado en Sevilla en 1999, entre la Institución Colombina y la Biblioteca del Congreso. El acuerdo estableció una colaboración digital proyectada a poner al acceso de estudiantes e investigadores, documentos únicos en su carácter, sobre la herencia cultural de España y los Estados Unidos. Este primer paso fue seguido con la firma de un acuerdo entre la Biblioteca del Congreso y la Biblioteca Nacional de España, cuya firma tuvo lugar en el Great Hall del edificio Jefferson, el 24 de febrero de 2000 con motivo de la visita a Washington de SS. MM. Dn. Juan Carlos y Dña. Sofia.
