The Atlantic World: America and the Netherlands is a bilingual, multi-format English-Dutch digital library that tells the story of the Dutch presence in America and the interactions between the United States and the Netherlands from Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage to the post-World War II period.

The collection is intended for use by students, scholars, and researchers worldwide. The goal of the project, which is part of the Library's Global Gateway initiative, is to digitize and present important collections of books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials that relate to the interactions between the United States and the Netherlands over the last four centuries. The initial focus of materials is the colonization and settlement of New Netherland up to 1664.

The project grew out of discussions between the National Library of the Netherlands and the Library of Congress in the summer of 2001. These discussions were undertaken at the initiative of Congressman Charles Taylor, then chairman of the Legislative Affairs sub-committee of the Appropriations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, who also participated in the discussions. Funding for the Library of Congress participation in the project is provided by Congress under the Library’s budget, and reflects the commitment of Congress and the Library to expanding digital access to the Library’s English and foreign-language collections.

De Atlantische Wereld: Amerika en Nederland is een Engels-Nederlandse, multimediale digitale bibliotheek. Deze vertelt het verhaal van de Nederlandse aanwezigheid in Amerika en de interacties tussen de Verenigde Staten en Nederland in de periode vanaf Henry Hudson's reis in 1609 tot aan de periode van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

De collectie is bedoeld voor studenten, geleerden en onderzoekers in de Verenigde Staten, Nederland en andere landen. Het doel van het project, dat onderdeel is van het Global Gateway initiatief van de Library of Congress, is om belangrijke collecties boeken, kaarten, handschriften, foto's en ander materiaal, die te maken hebben met de interacties tussen de Verenigde Staten en Nederland in de voorbije vier eeuwen, in digitale vorm ten toon te stellen. De eerste fase van het project betreft de kolonisatie en de stichting van Nieuw-Nederland tot aan 1664.

Het project is een uitvloeisel van gesprekken tussen de Koninklijke Bibliotheek (de Nationale Bibliotheek van Nederland) en de Library of Congress in de zomer van 2001. Deze gesprekken vonden plaats op initiatief van Congreslid Charles Taylor, die toen voorzitter was van de subcommissie Wetgevingsaangelegenheden van de Commissie Kredieten van het Huis van Afgevaardigden, en die zelf ook aan de gesprekken deelnam. De deelname van de Library of Congress aan het project wordt betaald uit middelen die daartoe door het Congres aan de bibliotheek ter beschikking zijn gesteld. Het project geeft uitdrukking aan de wens van het Congres en de Bibliotheek om de digitale toegang tot de Engelse en buitenlandstalige collecties van de Bibliotheek te vergroten.
