Selections from the William Kent Gilbert Collection

Manuscript Division

The William Kent Gilbert Collection contains papers relating to the early history of Delaware. It includes four volumes of miscellaneous state papers and two portfolios of land grants, miscellaneous deeds, and additional papers. The papers digitized include eighteen land grants and patents, in Dutch and in early English translation, relating to Dutch settlements near New Amstel--present-day New Castle, Delaware-- during the period between 1658 and 1682.

De William Kent Gilbert Collection bevat stukken die betrekking hebben op de vroege geschiedenis van Delaware. Hierin treffen we ook vier banden aan met diverse staatsdocumenten en twee portefeuilles met landconcessies, diverse aktes en andere stukken. Tot de gedigitaliseerde stukken behoren achttien landconcessies en aktes van landoverdracht, in het Nederlands en in een Engelse vertaling. Zij hebben betrekking op Nederlandse nederzettingen bij Nieuw-Amstel -- het huidige New Castle, Delaware -- in de periode tussen 1658 en 1682.

Geography and Map Division

Henry Harrisse (1829-1910) wrote extensively on Christopher and Ferdinand Columbus, John and Sebastian Cabot, and the early voyages of American exploration. Through his bequest, the Library of Congress acquired in 1915 Harrisse's copies of his publications, rare manuscript maps, and his study collection of photographs, facsimiles, and tracings of early maps. These selections feature seventeenth-century Dutch maps of North and South America (1639) by Johannes Vingboons, cartographer for the Prince of Nassau.

Henry Harrisse (1829-1910) heeft veel geschreven over Christopher en Ferdinand Columbus, John en Sebastian Cabot en de eerste ontdekkingsreizen naar Amerika. Dankzij een legaat van hem kwam de Library of Congress in 1915 in het bezit van Harrisse's exemplaren van zijn publicaties, zeldzame getekende kaarten, en zijn studiecollectie van foto's, reproducties en overtrekken van oude kaarten. Deze selecties omvatten 17^de-eeuwse Nederlandse kaarten van Noord- en Zuid-Amerika (1639), gemaakt door Johannes Vingboons, cartograaf van de Prins van Nassau.
