Manuscript Selections from the Netherlands National Archives

The National Archives of the Netherlands is the leading center for the study of Dutch history and culture at the national level, including the history of the former Dutch colonies. Its collections include government records as well as the papers of individuals and institutions important to the history of the Netherlands. This letter from West India Company administrator Pieter Schagen describes the purchase of Manhattan from the Native Americans in 1626.

Map Selections from the Netherlands National Archives

This pictorial map by Johannes Vingboons depicts New Amstersdam as it may have looked in 1626, the year that it was acquired by the Dutch West India Company. Vingboons was cartographer to the prince of Nassau and is well known for his detailed maps of North and South America.

De kaart van Johannes Vingboons laat zien hoe Nieuw-Amsterdam eruit heeft gezien toen het in 1626 door de West-Indische Compagnie werd gekocht. Johannes Vingboons was cartograaf van de Prins van Nassau en is bekend om zijn gedetailleerde kaarten van Noord- en Zuid-Amerika.
