Background

The Koninklijke Bibliotheek was founded in 1798, based on the private library of exiled stadtholder Prince Willem V. Named the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in 1806, the KB was declared the National Library of the Netherlands in 1982 on the occasion of the inauguration of its present building.

The Koninklijke Bibliotheek has the mission to preserve the national printed and written heritage. As a depository library, the KB collects and preserves all publications that are issued by officially registered Dutch publishers as well as a good deal of Dutch grey literature. A scholarly library, the KB serves both the academic community and individual scholars. The KB carries out special tasks relating to the national information infrastructure, library cooperation, library research, and the application of technology in information services.

Collections

The collections of the KB comprise more than 3.3 million items, including 2.5 million books and 15,000 current periodicals. Special collections include incunabula, medieval and modern manuscripts, and early printed books. The KB also has important collections of songbooks, children’s literature, books on sports and games, books of private presses, and the world’s largest collection of Dutch newspapers and newspapers from the former Dutch colonies.

Achtergrond

De Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) werd gesticht in 1798, op basis van de privé-bibliotheek van de verbannen stadhouder Prins Willem V. In 1806 kreeg ze de naam Koninklijke Bibliotheek, in 1982 werd de KB ter gelegenheid van de opening van het huidige gebouw officieel tot Nationale Bibliotheek van Nederland verklaard.

De voornaamste taak van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek is het in stand houden van het nationale gedrukte en geschreven erfgoed. Als depotbibliotheek verzamelt en bewaart de KB alle publicaties van officieel geregistreerde Nederlandse uitgevers, en ook veel Nederlandse grijze literatuur.

Als wetenschappelijke bibliotheek verleent de KB diensten aan de academische gemeenschap en aan individuele wetenschappers.

De KB vervult speciale taken met betrekking tot de nationale informatie-infrastructuur, de samenwerking tussen bibliotheken, bibliotheekonderzoek en de toepassing van technologie in informatiediensten.

Collecties

De collectie van de KB omvat meer dan 3,3 miljoen banden, waaronder 2,5 miljoen boeken en 15.000 tijdschriften. Speciale collecties omvatten incunabelen, middeleeuwse en moderne handschriften, alsook boeken uit de 16^de-18^de eeuw.

De KB heeft ook belangrijke collecties liedboeken, kinderboeken, sport- en spelboeken en boeken die particulier zijn gedrukt. Daarnaast bezit de werelds grootste collectie van Nederlandse kranten en kranten van de voormalige Nederlandse koloniën.
