The enormous size and variety of its collections make the Library of Congress the largest library in the world. Comprised of approximately 115 million items in virtually all formats, languages, and subjects, these collections are the single most comprehensive accumulation of human expression ever assembled. True to the Jeffersonian ideal, the collections are broad in scope, including research materials in more than 450 languages, over 35 scripts, and in many media.

The growth of the collections is relentless. Materials come to the Library through an acquisitions program that extends throughout the world and includes over fifteen thousand agreements with foreign governments and research institutions for the exchange of research materials; gifts; purchases; transfers from other U.S. government agencies; and copyright deposits. Each day about thirty-one thousand items arrive at the Library; approximately seven thousand of these items will become part of the permanent collections.

The extent of the Library's collection building activities is extremely broad, covering virtually every discipline and field of study, and including the entire range of different forms of publication and media for recording and storing knowledge. The Library has always recognized that its preeminent role is to collect at the national level. It has striven to develop richly representative collections in all fields, except technical agriculture and clinical medicine (where it yields precedence to the National Agricultural Library and the National Library of Medicine, respectively).

For nearly two centuries, the Library of Congress has relied first on its own expert staff, as well as copyright depositors, bookdealers, scholars, and other experts to assure that the national collections of the United States continue to enable the Library of Congress to fulfill its mission to "sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations."

A Biblioteca do Congresso é considerada a maior biblioteca do mundo tendo em vista o tamanho e a variedade de suas coleções. Estas coleções incluem aproximadamente 115 milhões de itens apresentados virtualmente em todos os formatos, línguas e assuntos, e constituem o maior acervo jamais acumulado de formas de expressão humana. Fiéis aos ideais de seu fundador Thomas Jefferson, as suas coleções são muito abrangentes possibilitando a pesquisa em mais de 450 idiomas, inclusive mais de 35 escritas não alfabéticas, e diferentes meios de comunicação.

O crescimento das coleções é ininterrupto. As obras chegam à Biblioteca através de um programa de aquisições que cobre todo o mundo e inclue mais de 15.000 acordos de intercâmbio com governos e instituições de pesquisa estrangeiras; de doações; de compras; de transferências de outros orgãos governamentais; e de depositantes legais. Cerca de 31.000 itens chegam diariamente à Biblioteca; destes, aproximadamente 700 são incorporados às coleções permanentes.

As coleções da Biblioteca cobrem um campo de atividades externamente amplo, abrangendo virtualmente todos os temas e campos de estudo, compreendendo uma ampla gama de jornais e meios de gravar e conservar o conhecimento. A Biblioteca considera que seu principal objetivo é coletar as informações dentro do país. A instituição tem procurado ser a mais completa possível em todas as áreas, com exceção de técnica de agricultura e medicina clínica (onde a preferência é dada à National Agricultural Library e à National Library of Medicine, respectivamente). Durante quase dois séculos o quadro técnico da Biblioteca do Congresso, assim como os depositantes legais os liveiros, pesquisadores e outros especialistas, tem possibilitado que esta instituição cumpra a sua missão de "manter e preservar para as futuras gerações uma coleção universal do conhecimento e criatividade humanos".
