No Natal do ano de 1889, o poeta norte-americano Walt Whitman (1819-1892) escreveu um poema saudando o nascimento da nova república.

BEM-VINDO irmão brasileiro! Abriu-se teu amplo espaço,
Oferecemos a mão amiga, um sorriso vindo do Norte, uma saudação brilhante.

É nossa, nossa a atual vibração, a busca da democracia, a aprovação e a fé)
A ti estendemos nossos braços, volvemos nossos pensamentos,
A ti dirigimos nosso olhar esperançoso,
Tu te unistes aos livres, Tu passastes a ter brilho próprio,
Tu aprendestes bem a verdadeira lição com as nações que brilham nos céus, (Brilham mais que a Cruz e a Coroa),
Vamos chegar ao topo de toda a humanidade.
