Early planning for a top-to-bottom renewal of the Cannon House Office Building is underway.
The Cannon House Office Building is the oldest Congressional office building outside of the U.S. Capitol Building. When completed in 1908, the building contained many building facilities modern for their time, including forced-air ventilation systems, steam heat, individual lavatories with hot and cold running water and ice water, telephones, and electricity. Originally there were 397 offices and 14 committee rooms in the Cannon Building; the 1932 remodeling resulted in 85 two- or three-room suites, 10 single rooms, and 23 committee rooms.
Due to its advanced age, the House of Representatives is in the early planning stages for a top-to-bottom renewal of the Cannon Building. The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) has assembled a team of in-house experts and consultants who are working with House leaders to define key aspects of the project. This initial effort will better define the estimated costs, scope of work, and potential timeline for the work. The AOC expects this initial planning to conclude in 2013.
The AOC recently selected a Construction Manager as Agent (CMa) and Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) and with the Architecture/Engineer firm will begin to initiate the detailed design process together, which is expected to take approximately two years.
Construction for the Cannon Renewal Project is anticipated to begin in 2015.
