• i guess these are people on top of the buildings? - *cindi
  • Yes, if one clicks on the enlarged view, one can clearly see that these are people up here. - Wystan
  • Think this says 'Lincoln Funeral' backwards. As this is a glass plate....I find it fascinating too that someone wrote this at the time! - seeks2dream-Soz! On & Off-at the Mo
  • Is she holding an American flag, I wonder? - bredlo
  • In the enlargement, this appears to be a hoop skirt with a pattern of wide stripes -- probably not a flag. - Wystan
  • not the kind of thing you'd normally wear to a funeral - Dill Pixels
  • My guess is that funeral attire, like bridal attire, has changed considerably since 1865. It's probably her Sunday best. - random letters

Fantastic photo of a great man in history.

I only wonder why this photo is flipped.
When flipped horizontal, it reads .......
" lincoln's funeral " written on the top.

    Just wondering ~

The photo, as presented here, is correctly oriented. If you look at one of the archival TIFFs on the LOC website, which have much higher resolution, you can see several signs on the buildings; they're not flipped.

Here's the explanation: Remember that this is a glass plate negative; it's simply a big, clear glass shelf with photographic emulsion coated on it. (The Victorians didn't have the plastics used in modern "film"; the best they could do was clunky, fragile glass.) So, the unknown archivist who wrote "lincoln's funeral" simply wrote it on the wrong side of the plate, so that it came out backward when printed. It didn't really matter, since the text was intended to be cropped out of prints anyway. It was just there as an indexing aid.

The solemn funeral procession treks its way up the nationally famous Pennsylvannia Avenue, but the memory of Father Abraham Lincoln will simply endure forever in the hearts of free men everywhere. Well done, Father Abraham...enter into the kingdom! 1809-2009. The BICENTENNIAL of Abraham Lincoln.

Anybody know where on Pennsylvania Avenue this was taken? I see a couple of business names, and plan to consult the City Directory for 1865, but before I schlep over to MLK...
