  • From the way the newspaper drapes, I would guess it is a copy of the New York Tribune, or one like it. Greeley's paper was printed on a huge broadsheet - as large as a baby blanket -- then folded into its eight pages. And it had more rag content than most papers of the era. - gbvico

Perhaps one month before were Gettysburg and Vicksburg won :)
Great set! When I see a Lincoln portrait I always rember the phrase "nothing touches the tired spot" This is one man that gave MUCH for the common good.

Notice how this photograph is no much more natural and candid as compared to the earlier Daguerreotype. Exposures were far shorter and able to capture a fraction of a moment.
Also people: Please stop commenting with disrespect upon Abraham Lincoln with your 2009 P.C mushbrains. [This was happening more so on Mr. Lincoln's other photos posted by this institution]

I concur with Whiskeygonebad! Please respect the Bicentennial of perhaps this country's greatest U.S. president.

Every comment here was made with respect...

And I do agree with the fact that he looks very happy in this moment. It seems that old photographs rarely captured a look like this. Amazing man.

He looks just like a regular guy here---very human, very natural...... He might have worn his clothes a bit big to disguise how thin he was?? Just an idea......

It just looks like he is swimming in his clothes. The pictures of him always seem so unreal to me. To me he looks as if he would much rather be some place else and is being as patient as possible. The look on his face (to me) reminds me of "this is the last one right" faces my kids give me.

I got news for all you gossips...Lincoln wasn't gay. I've got 35 books on the man and he was not. The people who believe that are the people who their news from the National Enquirer. He had a wife and 4 children. The rumor started because he shared a bed with a man when he was in his 20s. There were also other men living in that same house who shared beds. It wasn't scandalous back then. The guy he shared a bed with told him where he could find a prostitute. His law partner for 17 yrs said that Lincoln feared he caught syphillis from a woman.

i dont think it would be mentioned in books if he was gay.they would have been a pr machine back then to improve his image.
people lie remember(“I did not have sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky.” Those are the famous. words of our President, Mr. Bill Clinton. Later we found out that he lied ...mmm at the end of the day does it realy matter if he had sex with a man and a woman.

  20. Oreo Fairy (46 months ago | reply)

Just get over yourselves my gosh. Does it really matter? He has been dead for 146 years. He is the only person who could tell us if he is gay or not. So lets discuss the picture and not whether he was gay or not gay or how many people he slept with.

Just saw this for the first time today. Mr. Lincoln does look like he is in a happy mood. I think this is the best relaxed posed photo I have ever seen of him.
For you people who have bad things to say about this past president, say your words to your parents. Hiding behind your PC is just a cowardly thing to do. Freedom of speach is granted to idiots and cowards too!

you can fool some people all the time, you can fool all the people sometimes, but you can`t fool all the people all the time,A.Lincoln.

I don't comment on the remarks made to this photo because anything I say would upset someone. It is just a photo of a great American president, and I like that.

Dianakk....you hit the nail right on the head,he was slightly amused that day for there were lots of flies buzzing around, that gave Mr Gardner a hard time trying to get the right shots,Gardner disposed lots of shots that day because of the flies, and could only save six of them,I have one of the disposed, with a fly on his cheek and one eye closed !!
