Olive Fremstad (14 March 1871 - 21 April 1951) was the stage name of Anna Olivia Rundquist, a celebrated Swedish-American opera diva who sang in both the mezzo-soprano and soprano ranges.

has another picture that is likely of the same event. She was "building a summer home for herself at Bridgton, in the Heart of the Maine woods."

Better copy of same picture, from NYT, Sunday July 11, 1915

suggests that she had owned the property for a few years and found chopping wood pleasant relaxation from her operatic career.

Aside: I know from experience that firewood is necessary even in summer in a Maine camp.

A 1920 account of Fremstad and her Maine property, which she called Nawandyn, includes this photo, inscribed and autographed.

There is a heartfelt memoir, in the form of a book review of a biography of Fremstsad, by Carl van Vechten at
      docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://64.62.200.7 0/PERIODICAL...
The property at Bridgton, Maine is mentioned.
Another photo, apparently from the same session:

Her compound near Bridgton is still around, and it looks like you can rent it:

Thanks for all of the background information about Olive Fremstad and her woodcutting activities. We'll add information when we next update the description. (There are some additional photos of Olive Fremstad -- some in more operatic attire -- in the Prints & Photographs Online Catalog: www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=fremstad&s t=gallery )
