English Description: In the letter, dated November the 5th, 1626 and directed to the States General, West India Company administrator Peter Schagen described the situation of New Amsterdam. Among things he mentioned the fact that the island of Manhattan had been purchased from the Indians for goods worth sixty Dutch guilders.

Dutch Description: In deze brief, gedateerd 5 November 1626, beschreef West Indische Compagnie bewindhebber Pieter Schaghen, de situatie in Nieuw Amsterdam aan de Staten Generaal. Hij meldde ondermeer het gegeven dat het eiland Manhattan van de Indianen was gekocht in ruil voor goederen ter waarde van zestig gulden.
